Spring is well under way here in northern California, and my latest work reflects it, don't you think? Not that I was planning for a bunch of springtime pieces, that's just what came out this weekend. The large butterfly piece is what I made from the etching shown in the previous post.

One of the coolest aspects of working with metal clay is it's ability to take an impression. While there are countless commercially made textures out there, it doesn't take long before you want to make your own. This was true for me when I started seeing textures I had bought being used in other people's work. I also wanted to use my own images. Many people use photo polymer plates (PPP) to make their own textures, which is a process used in printmaking. I make my own etched brass plates, which is very easy, costs less and produces fine detail than PPP. I etched the butterfly last night from the artwork shown, I was amazed at the fine lines I was able to get.

If asked, I would certainly say that I have not been feeling particularly silly or light hearted lately, but my some of the stuff I made this past weekend is saying otherwise. I've had the idea of doing a concrete ice cream cone for a long time now, so I finally just made one. Now I want one in mint chocolate chip! There are cupcakes wanting to be expressed in silver and concrete too, perhaps this weekend. I've also been wanting to do smaller pieces, the ladybug lent itself well to this.

Today is our sweet Lulu Bug's 4th birthday! Well, we don't know the date for sure, but she was dropped off at the shelter at the age of about 5 weeks, so it's close to today. She probably came from a breeder who didn't want her since she's not super wrinkly. She's a horsecoat Shar Pei, so she's lean and athletic and mostly wrinkly on her face. We sure do love her and think she has exactly the right amount of wrinkles.
I'm still staying up way too late every night making stuff. Here's a custom piece I did last week of a Rowan leaf. It was one of those things that ended up being a lot more work than I anticipated, but fortunately I made 2 and sold the second one almost right away. Now I need to make another one! Oh well, I'm getting used to 6 hours of sleep.
